Holidays.......what are they for?

It's that time of year isn't it?

People who train with me giving me warning that they won't be here for a week because they are going away on holiday.

The summer is a quiet time for someone self-employed in the Wellness and Fitness business. I am fairly lucky though that some of my virtual personal training clients take me away with them on holiday and keep their regular sessions while away.

I am always being asked if I am going on holiday, and, to be honest, other than a very busy 5 days of honeymoon last year, and a few weeks of running The Forces March over the years, not forgetting a couple of Battlefield walking tours with my Mum, I haven't had what most people call a 'proper holiday' since 2003!

Lots of people go away for 'all inclusive' breaks to hot places, eat, drink and be lazy for a week or two, and, I suppose that's why I haven't done it. Firstly, I can't afford a holiday, and secondly, I would rather find something more active to do.

I still haven't explored as much of the UK as I would like yet, so abroad can wait, although now I have a lovely husband to spend time with, maybe a hot week exploring Portugal or Greece, somewhere hot, could be a bit more fun than I originally thought!

Holidays when I was younger were brilliant! We would mostly come, as a family, to the West Country, Devon and Cornwall. My favourite holidays were in Polperro, Cornwall, and I have wonderful happy memories of those times. My Mum and Dad made sure we had a bit of beach time, some adventuring, museums and even when it rained it didn't matter, because we were all together, and for me having Dad with us all the time, away from his work, was a real luxury.

As I grew older, summer Guide camps were an important time away for me, although anyone who has ever been on a guide camp will know that it's no resting opportunity. It's a constant of chores and adventures, camp fires, wood collecting, making gadgets, singing, tidying, it was everything I love, and being under canvas, breathing in wonderful fresh air for a week really re-charged me. I guess you can say that a busy week is a great holiday for someone like me!

Some summers I would go away with my best friend Sarah, her Mum and Dad, and we would head to West Devon to stay with her Aunt and Uncle. Those weeks there were the main cause of me wanting to move to Devon, to be close to the sea and Moor, what could be more perfect?

I've been living in Devon for 20 years this month, and if you notice, I haven't had a 'proper' holiday in all that time. And here is why, I suppose, when you live somewhere that is so beautiful, you are always on holiday! I mean, it's a working holiday, but even now, when work is done, I have a short walk over the Burrows to the beach for a dip in the sea. Every morning I am on the beach with the dogs. I have the most amazing quality of life because of this and I think myself so lucky, and believe me, I never take it for granted.

Sarah also made her move to Devon and lives just up the road from me, she's on holiday all the time too, a working holiday, obviously!

There are some places that I want to visit in the world for a holiday, and maybe one day I will get there, but as I'm writing up the notes for this blog, the sun is shining, I'm in the garden, there is a cool breeze coming off the sea and the sounds of nature are all around me. I can wait a little longer.

WHY do you go on holiday?
WHAT'S your favourite holiday destination?
WHERE are you going on holiday?
