Hard work and dedication.......
I started work doing a local paper round, the weekend herald, you got a free rape alarm when you took on a round, it was the 1980's, there seemed to be a lot of raping in those days!
I heaved my big bag of papers around, actually, I had one of those old lady shopping baskets on wheels for this purpose, and every household in Meadvale, the village where I grew up, had one delivered, even the abandoned spooky house near to the common. There must have been a stack of them by the time the house was eventually demolished, but as a curious child, I always wanted to go down there and peer through the windows. However, I digress.....
MY second ever job was at a local hair salon, 'SOMERSETS' I saw that it was opening and put a note through the door to see if I could get a job there, if you don't ask eh? Well, Maggie got in touch with me and I worked there off and on for years, even baby-sitting her son James on occasions too. Maggie was the best boss, she is sadly no longer with us, but she was the greatest of women, strong, funny, a bit scatty and the kindest person ever. I made tea, washed hair, swept up hair, cleaned combs and mirrors, mixed up colours, took out rollers, and learned a whole load of hairdressing skills that I still have to this day thanks to Maggie. I earned £1.15p an hour and also had tips too and I loved going to work.
BACK in those days and before, most people had a good work ethic, most of my school friends had Saturday and after school jobs, it was normal. In secondary school alongside working at the hairdressers I also did a school cleaning job. I worked an hour every day after school and in the holidays we all went in and washed walls! Hard work and very demoralising but I was earning money and knowing the value of that money too.
I have always been employed or self-employed, even when I was made redundant I decided to wash up in a kitchen alongside starting my own business up as I couldn't find suitable work at what I was doing back then, grounds maintenance. I took the plunge and that was when Fighting Fit Devon was born and I've not looked back ever since, of course I have since re-branded and expanded!
I have noticed that the younger generation are very work-shy! I think seeing too many influencers earning money for making videos etc has made them have unrealistic views on the working world. No one is out there washing dishes, cleaning kennels, cleaning offices, digging up weeds, all jobs that I used to do without a thought, as long as I was earning money then it didn't matter. People are far too fussy about work, too self-obsessed and arrogant. They think that menial jobs are beneath them! Something needs to be done, the world is going to be an awful place in the future, but I think we all know that already.
I could go on about this subject for a very long time, I love my job which is great, and that's what you should be feeling every day you get up to go to work, when you start to hate it, that's when your next plan comes into force, that's when you plan your exit and a new exciting job that you will love!
HARD work and dedication pays off, it gives your life meaning and gives you the money to enjoy it to it's fullest.
