Mental health awareness week

MY work consists of helping people, daily, with their mental health niggles.

EVERY day brings it's troubles and stresses and how we deal with them makes all the difference to our physical health, alongside our mental health.

WHAT I do see happening recently, a lot, is people going to the doctors and coming out with anti-depressants for things that shouldn't warrant it. They literally hand them out like sweets for the slightest change in mood.

Menopause - anti-depressants

Grief - anti-depressants

Moving house - anti-depressants

Relationship breakup - anti-depressants

Money issues - anti-depressants

AND so many more daily stresses that can be sorted out with the support of friends and family. The things that can be talked out, sorted out and put into perspective, without the aid of prescription medication.

I am by no means making light of any mental health issue, how we deal with any of the above issues and more is very personal, and a personal approach is needed. But that is all that should be needed, a personal way forward through a therapist or coach. Medication should be the very last resort.

More complex mental health issues I understand may need pharmaceutical intervention, but I am talking about the every day stresses and strains on life. These happen to all of us, they have happened to me, I've not been without my share of life troubles and I've not been without stress and anxiety, but I have dealt with it through meditation, good sleep, the right kind of exercise, proper nutrition, and talking to the people who make the most sense.

IF you are going through some tough times with your mental health, before you go to your gp, find a valued and trusted friend and talk it through. Find a therapist who can help, go for a long walk in nature and get a good night's sleep, you'll be surprised how much that all helps.

AND remember, you are not alone, not everyone is happy all the time, life does have it's ups and downs, and so it can only get better if you really want it to.

Take good care.
