Why is wellness so important to our lives?

This year (2025 as I type) I lunched a new idea as part of my business, the 'Wellness Check up.'

It came about as an accident really, in theory I am doing this all the time, with not only my PT clients, but with hypnotherapy too, and the occasional reflexology client.

One of my accountability clients asked me for some extra advice, and I got my notepad out and we wrote a plan, I asked about all aspects of her life, including exercise, sleep, time out, all the things, and she followed the plan, lost weight and got happier and healthier.

My little brain sprang into gear and I decided that doing a complete mind and body wellness check up was a good thing for people who are a little lost on their health and fitness journey. We all know that a visit to the GP is restricted to about ten minutes, and they get more money for giving out prescriptions, so don't ask about how they can help you with your health anymore. I know many of my clients have gone to see the GP about an issue, the client is overweight and unhealthy and yet, they have not been questioned about their diet and lifestyle. This could save the NHS a fortune, but it wouldn't make the doctors and pharmaceutical companies any extra dosh!

Since creating the wellness check up as an actual thing I have had a few come to me for help and it's worked, some are sleeping better, some lost weight, some got their exercise head back on, all have changed their lives around to being fitter and healthier and more conscious of what they are doing.

So here are my tips for giving yourself a wellness check, because as much as I need to earn money, I want to help people too. So things you need to look at.

Food - do you drink enough water? Is your diet high in processed foods and sugar? Is your love of caffeine or alcohol ruining your health? Remember that old saying, 'you are what you eat?' Well it is absolutely true, you wouldn't put petrol in a diesel car, it's not made for it and would ultimately fail, same as us, we are not meant to be eating highly processed, man-made poisons, our bodies will not work the same and ultimately fail.

Exercise - we are designed to move, not to sit and look at a screen, we should be moving about more of the day than not. Do you count your steps? Can you do your 10,000 a day? Although a better target is 15,000 a day. Do you stretch? Are you strong? Can you sit on the floor and stand up easily? Do you moan while getting up and down? Do you have to sit to put your shoes and socks on? All these things should be easy, so if they are not, you aren't getting enough exercise.

Sleep - using a fitness tracker is a great way to see how much sleep you are getting, but when I do a wellness check I like to ask about bedtime routines, do you turn your phone off an hour before bed? Limit screen time before bed? How late in the day are you having caffeine? Is your bedroom cool at night? There are so many factors to getting a good night's sleep, and you need to look at the big picture, if you aren't getting the right exercise then you aren't going to be worn out enough to sleep well. If you have a high sugar diet, you may have to nap in the day and then be unable to sleep at night. The big picture slowly shows itself.

Meditation and relaxation - do you manage your stress appropriately? Do you talk through problems with others? Do you socialise enough? Do you have family who can help you? When do you just empty your head and relax? This is a vital part of mental health wellness, if you bottle things up, get stressed, and don't deal with issues it will bite you in the backside eventually. Another old saying, 'it's good to talk' is a perfect example that we have known for a long time how to help with mental health issues, and talking therapy is a good place to start.

These are the basics, have a look at your own life based on this, can you change anything? Is your life healthy? Are you getting the most out of yourself?

And here's the bit where I try and flog you my services, because if you have done all the above, and need some direction, I can help. So please get in touch.

Other than that, be happy and healthy and do the best for your body, you've only got one, so look after it!
