The wise women......
The facts behind the persecution of men and women for witchcraft are highly redacted.
The honest truth won't be out there online that's for sure, because no one wants to believe what religion was responsible for. And it wasn't just the Spanish inquisition and the Catholic Church, it was all male dominated religion.
And no, it wasn't just the persecution of women, because there were men too accused of witchcraft, and it wasn't just calm friendly midwife-types that were targeted, there were some people out there doing some crazy things and practising devil-worship.
The myths and legends behind the persecution are huge, and because the truth is not certain, I don't want to write things here that are not factually correct, but what I do know is that because of this persecution and vastly exaggerated gossip since, the local village wise woman has a lot to prove.
The existence of a local wise woman has been wiped out by medical doctors and other specialists. But some remain, and most that I am aware of are wonderful people who help others. Do what thou wilt but harm none - karma and the threefold return. If you do bad things, bad things come back at you three times as bad. So very few people would do bad things for other people for that very reason.
Way back in the day, nearly thirty years ago when I lived in Surrey, I was nicknamed 'Debbie the witch' because I made herbal teas and remedies for the people of the village, I would read Tarot cards, and we would forge plans to help people get back on track with their lives. A couple of times I was asked if I could 'do a spell' to punish someone for something, I refused to help. If revenge was their game, they could take that on themselves in a more practical manner. I believe a lot of those practising wisdom for their community feel the same.
If you read up on mainstream sites, the 'women' who were persecuted were evil devil-worshippers, and the rumour that they were just gentle midwives was heavily sat upon. The truth, as usual was hidden from the public, religion was good, devil-worship was wrong and killing these people was the way to deal with it! Yep, so wrong in itself! Let's kill people we feel a bit threatened by because they are doing good in the community, but it isn't based around the church.
I don't know what you believe, or what you think about this, but what I know is that I still help people in my work, I heal through reflexology and hypnotherapy, I advise on health through nutrition and exercise, in common terms, I am a witch! But in reality, I'm just qualified in healing and health. Would you want to burn me for what I do in my every day work? I would like to think not, but it's no different from what the wise people of the village did, and still do.
Let me know your thoughts!
