Value your health

HOW many times have you been poorly, got better and thought nothing of it, unless of course that illness was really bad?

MOST of us get a cold or a bit of a headache, get better and get on with our lives, but for some, living with a debilitating recurrent illness can really get you down, but on the plus side, you really make the most of those 'well' times.

LAST week I was suffering at the hands of my gut again. I have diverticular disease, following two separate lots of salmonella poisoning. I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) because of this and it basically wrecked my colon! Two sections of it.

I control my IBS with diet, mainly eating the low FODMAP diet, eliminating anything that will cause my gut irritation, but very occasionally something will get 'stuck in a pocket' in my colon and cause me great pain and discomfort, and many days stuck in the toilet!

LAST week was such a time, I was really ill from Wednesday right through until Sunday, when I was actually able to eat again. For an active person who thrives on being busy, this was a major mental health issue for me, sleeping for hours when I wasn't rushing to the toilet (TMI!) and basically feeling like I was being lazy, on the sofa watching crime drama! But actually it seems that my body needed the rest anyway and on Monday morning after eating a little bit of chicken Sunday night I was up and at 'em and ready to go!

ALL this week I have been ever so grateful for feeling well again, it's kept me singing and dancing all day, and basically being an annoying cheery weirdo. So normal again in my world! Having this awful issue with my health makes me grateful on a daily basis that I can do the things I want to while I still can, feeling good, no cramps or bloating, I feel alive, and as a reminder of how blessed I am I can think back to that awful weekend stuck in between sleep and the toilet and just how awful I felt.

TAKE a moment today to feel good about your health, or maybe you are feeling poorly too, but use this as a reminder to feel grateful when you are better again.

LOOK after your mental and physical health as well as you can do, all the time, without our health, what have we got?

EAT healthily, exercise, hydrate, supplement when you need to and look after your mental health. Get out in the sunshine when it's there and breath in big lungfuls of fresh air at every opportunity!
